El Farafra Oasis is the smallest oasis in the Libyan Desert, west of Egypt, and is located mid - way between El Dakhla and Bahariya Oases. El Farafra is inhabited by an estimated 5,000 people living within its single village, most of whom are local Bedouins. The principal geographical attraction is the White Desert, located 45 Km north of this oasis. As the name depicts, the desert is coated with a white creamy color with gigantic chalk - rock formations created over time by occasional sand storms in the area.

Moreover, there is an art center that accommodates a museum and studio where paintings and ceramic art work of local artists are displayed, in addition to a garden teeming with sculptures made of natural elements extracted from the desert.

In Pharaonic times, El Farafra was known as Taiht, the Land of the Cow. The oldest part of the oasis lies on a hillside in a serene context next to palm orchards near the hot sulphur springs at Bir Setta and the El Mufid Lake.

The oasis is eminent for the diverse assortment of beautiful hand - knitted camel - hair sweaters and scarves as well as safari day trips by jeep and camel treks into the White Desert, Bahariya, El Dakhla, and Siwa Oases
