El Dakhla is located approximately 200 Km west of El Kharga. On its northern horizon, it is surrounded by a wall of colorful rock formations and fertile cultivated areas scattered between sand dunes within the area, offering natural exquisite scenery.

El Dakhla's capital is Mut, a name that was attributed to the consort of God Amon. This ancient city came to existence in the Pharaonic Period and accommodates a vast array of historical relics. The Museum of Heritage comprises of several rooms, each of which exhibits a diversity of sculpted clay figures arranged to show different aspects of El Dakhla's culture and its local family life.

There is the Islamic Village of El Qasr, incorporating the remains of an Ayyubid mosque and situated almost 35 Km from Mut. There Bir Al Gabal is a palm - fringed salt lake designated for camping and picnic purposes. Pre - arranged day trips from Mut include visiting the 1st century Al Mozawaka tombs and Deir Al - Hagar, a temple originally dedicated to the Theban Triad. They also include visits to Bashendi where visitors can explore Roman tombs and a factory where carpets are still woven with scenes of the traditional Dakhla life. Nearby, lays the Islamic village Balaat, a trading post with ancient Nubia.

The oasis is abundant with charming natural springs, one of which is Ain Al Qasr springs located about 12 Km in the mountain where a variety of activities would keep visitors enthralled in camping and safari.
